A tribute to the crew of HMS Monmouth can be found in the Parish
Church of St. Mary's, Monmouth, Wales. Within the church at
the entrance to the tower is an oak and glass panelled screen, this
is the only know memorial to the crew of H.M.S. Monmouth. The Monmouth
Naval Association raised the funds to pay for screen. A memorial
service is held annually in the church on the anniversary of the
battle.
Entering St. Mary's through the tower door you then walk through
the screen into the church, upon turning around to view the screen
you are presented with a beautifully oak and glass panel screen
topped with the crest of the current HMS Monmouth. To it's immediate
right is a cabinet containing an honour roll of the crew, and to
the right of this is Monmouth corner where various articles about
the battle and ship can be found.

My daughter and I paid a brief visit to Monmouth on 18th October 2007,
having arranged to call into St Mary's we received a warm welcome
from the vicar, the Rev'd Richard Pain, and several members of the
Monmouth Naval Assocication. Rev'd Pain had kindly given his permission
for me to photograph the screen. During our visit we were informed
of a painting of HMS Monmouth that hung in the local library, which
we called into afterwards and received permission to photograph. Sadly,
our visit was over too soon and we had to leave Monmouth, however
we will call back at some time in the future. |
