Herbert Allcorn was born on May 21, 1887, in Lewes, East Sussex
in 1898 moved 3 mile to Ringmer, wher he lived with his parents and
twin brother Frederick. He later married Kate lived at The Briars,
Lewes Road, Ringmer.
Herbert served five years in the Royal Navy followed by a further
three years in the Reserve. On 13th July, 1914, he reported for duty
having been mobilised from the reserve, and was drafted to HMS Good
Hope. On August 6, they sailed for Newfoundland to intercept armed
German merchant ships in the area. By August 16, Good Hope had been
ordered south towards Panama under Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock’s
flag.
Herbert's widow named their son, who was born on February 7, 1915,
Herbert Henry Hope, after his father and his father's ship. |
