Bertie was born in Portsea, Portsmouth on July 15, 1885, the son of
Lindoff Thomas Sheaf and Harriett Rosina Sheaf. His father, Lindoff,
was a carpenter and his mother, Harriett, a staymaker. Bertie was
one of nine children, having six sisters and two brothers.
At the time of the 1901 census Bertie was on HMS Impregnable in Devonport.
Unusually, he is listed on the Naval Memorials in both Portsmouth
(his home town) and Plymouth (HMS Monmouth's home port). |
